Governor's Address

Dear Members,

Greetings from Division U!

Whenever a fellow toastmaster came to congratulate me for being promoted to Division U Governor, I always laugh and tell them: “It’s demotion, not promotion!”  In Toastmasters, the “higher” rank you go, the lower the hierarchy.

Why are members on top of the hierarchy in the Toastmasters Movement?  The reason is simple.  Without members, there will be no clubs. Without clubs, there will be no areas. And without areas, there will be no Division.

YOU are the reason why I have chosen to step forward to serve.  To me, the Division Governor badge is a symbol of service leadership - one of humility and not authority.

In line with the theme for District 80 “Renew Your Promise”, the theme for Division U this term is “Renew Your Promise with the U Attitude”. As you renew your Toastmaster’s promise to be a better communicator and leader, I hope that you will be inspired to “Renew Your Promise with the U Attitude”.

What is the U attitude?

Who is the most important person when you are making a speech? Is it yourself or the audience? The answer is obvious: "It's not about me, it's about YOU."

What is the purpose of the Distinguished Club Program (DCP)? Is it for the glory of the club president? So that District 80 can look good? Or is it for the members? While we use DCP points as a benchmark to award clubs that has performed well, when a club is able to achieve President's Distinguished Club status, it translates to member's growth! The bottom line is about the “U Attitude" again!

I live by the “U Attitude” and as a service leader of the new term, I hope to inspire all of you in Division U to share my passion and vision to serve the members and to “Renew Your Promise with the U Attitude”.

Trust me, it will be a beautiful journey for all of you.

Yours sincerely,
Jerlynn Ang, CC/CL
